How to score 8 bands in IELTS Writing Task

International English Language Testing System is the best assessment process to know about the language skills of non-native English speakers. This test is highly regarded because it gives accurate results considering the human factor which is an intrinsic part of a language. This exam checks the usage of English in both the aspects of communication which are expression (Speaking & Writing) and comprehension (Reading & Listening). Usually it is observed that Listening is the easiest module while Writing is the toughest and many test takers struggle to score well in Writing. Let us know more about the Writing module: There are two tasks in the Writing test that the test taker has to answer in one hour’s time. Task 2 is same for Academic as well as General Training test; however, Task 1 is different for both. For Academic test the Task 1 is Report writing, whereas for GT it is Letter Writing. Writing is a formal task so there are certain rules that one must follow while attempting these tasks. Here is what you must follow: 

• Write from extreme left to right and do not leave any space unnecessarily anywhere but leave a line after each paragraph.
• Do not use abbreviations, symbols and contractions (Can’t, don’t – use cannot or do not)
• Personal pronouns are allowed in Letter Writing as it is direct communication between two people. Apart from that, you are expected to write from the third person’s perspective.

 To score good bands in writing, you are supposed to follow all of the above and few other things that are discussed below: 

Understand the scoring: There are four aspects of the task which are checked and scored; you are expected to perform well in those to get good bands. 

• Task Response/Achievement: It is checked whether you have responded correctly to the question asked or not and have fulfilled the minimum words requirement or not. You must answer the question completely with relevant ideas and views.
• Cohesion & Coherence: The views written must be as per the demand of the question and should be explained well. Also, it is extremely important that your content is well organized and is easy to read and understand.
• Lexical Resources: You need to use appropriate words as per the situation and should avoid the repetition of words as much as possible. You must display a good range of vocabulary to the examiner. Using better words and idioms correctly will help to increase the bands.
• Grammatical Accuracy: Grammar is the base of any language and so is the case with English. To score well, it is essential that your tasks are grammatically correct except a few silly mistakes and must showcase your language skills. It is advised to use better conjunctions, make all types of sentences (Simple, Compound & Complex).

Make a Plan to Practice: There is no substitute to regular practice if you wish to excel in anything, therefore you must make a schedule to practice writing module daily using the timer for 1 hour so that you could finish your tasks in the given time in the exam as well. 

Time Management: Managing your one hour well has great significance in the test. It is a common site that aspirants struggle to finish both the tasks in the given one hour and some could not even finish it. To avoid that it is necessary that you plan the one hour and practice accordingly. You are supposed to invest 20 minutes in Task 1 and 40 minutes in Task 2 which ought to be followed strictly. In the allotted time for the tasks, you are supposed to Plan, Organize, Write, Edit and Revise (POWER) 

• Plan your task after reading the question. Understand it well and plan what you will write in the task and then stick to that while writing. Do not let new thoughts change that plan once you are writing as it makes it confusing and wastes your time.
• Organize your content so that the ideas are presented well and are easy to understand upon reading. The thoughts or ideas should be linked well with the question.
• Write the task using appropriate words and sentences.
• Edit the written task after proof-reading it so that you can correct your silly mistakes.
• Revise it once again before you submit.
